Burnley resident Precious has discovered a simple way to make her daily commute more rewarding through BetterPoints Lancashire. By introducing walking into her journey she’s staying active and has already noticed positive changes to her health. Here is what she had to say:
How did you find out about the app and why did you choose to get involved?
“I found out through East Lancashire NHS Hospitals Trust, where I work. They’d put an article up about it on their website.
What were your travel habits like before you joined the app?
“I would take the bus pretty much every day to get to work at Burnley General Hospital, or occasionally to Blackburn Hospital. Depending on my schedule, I would sometimes get a lift with a colleague instead.
How has the app helped you? What features do you enjoy?
“I like how it records your walks and bus trips automatically. You don’t have to remember to turn it on every time.
I like the points. You get reminder messages to check in and see your activities for the day. When I do I’ll always check to see what I’ve earned and if I’ve won something. I haven’t won a prize yet, but I am hopeful of getting one soon! I like the medals too, they’re extra motivating.
It’s nice to know the steps and journeys I’m taking every day are helping me towards something like a Tesco voucher. I have set my sights on reaching 5,000 points to get a £5 voucher.
How have your travel habits changed since using the app?
“I’ve realised that if I combine walking with getting the bus I earn more points, so it has motivated me to introduce more walking into my commute and get fewer lifts.
I could take the bus from immediately outside my house, but instead I’ve been walking 10 minutes to a different bus stop and hopping on there.
What benefits have you noticed as a result?
“I’m able to walk longer distances now without feeling out of breath. I have lost a few pounds as well. I am aiming to lose a bit more weight in time for my birthday in November and the app is helping me stay on track to achieve this goal.
I’m always very busy, so I am pleased that I’m now getting active through my journey to work. It makes me feel good.”
